Dia Practices Searching for Bed Bugs in the Office

Today Dia came into the office to do a Bed Bug detection drill. She has to keep up with her training daily. We took a capsule filled with bed bugs and hid it in the garage of the office. She only know French commands so people talking in the room will not distract her search.
She searched the office high and low looking for where we hid these pests. They aren't in the office.

She found them. You can tell that she has detected a Bed Bug when she sits still with her eyes on where she has located it.  She sniffed all the way out into the garage! Now she gets rewarded with her ball, her favorite toy! "Say bien Dia!"

Lawn Disease: Brown Patch

Winter Brown Patch or Rhizoctonia Blight has come to the south Florida area. It looks like there are brown dead patches of grass often in a circular shape.  This is a type of lawn disease that occurs in Florida during the winter time when the night temperatures below 60 degrees and the day temperatures are not above 80 degrees.  Excessive moisture where the foliage is wet for ten hours or more for several days.  Disease is severe at low mowing heights and poorly drained areas.  Avoid irrigation in the late afternoon and evening. Also clip grass at a higher height with a very sharp blade.  This disease is also more severe on lush turf fertilized with nitrogen, so stick to a strict fertilization schedule and only when needed.  Beach Environmental can treat this and many other lawn and ornamental diseases.
This Brown Patch was found in Jupiter Farms on 2/3/11

Consumers Beware: New Products are Harmful to Your Health

New products are making false claims about being able to eliminate Bed Bugs in 13 seconds flat.  These claims are not only unfeasible but this product could be risky to your health.
There is something that does not sound right about spraying chemicals directly on mattress, which you are then laying on and sleeping on.  This is what some new products are suggesting that you do.   No professional application means that it can easily be inappropriately applied to areas of your home that may be harmful.
These products have no LD 50 (lethal dose) on label.  This has to be on professional chemicals because it tells how much chemical can be used before it is lethal to humans.  All chemicals used for professional use have been tested and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that they are safe to be around humans.
Bed Bugs are becoming increasingly more resistant to chemical treatment methods it will be a short time before they are resistant to this chemical method.  Professional chemicals are approved to treat specific pests that they are used for.
Without taking proper steps to ensure you will eliminate these pest from your home you will be venerable to spread these bugs throughout your home, office and anywhere else you travel to.  It is so important to get a exterminating company involved before spreading these pests and causing a larger problem.

Fig Whiteflies Destroy Ficus Benjamina Trees Across Florida

If you have Ficus Benjamina Hedges or Trees, then this notice is for you.  For year Ficus Benjamina was the only plant that had no known insect predators that would damage it.  This is no longer true, an insect called Fig Whitefly was introducted to Miami and then spread rapidly throughout south Florida. So far the Fig Whitefly has only attack type of plant, which is the most popular hedge plant in the south Florida area. These whiteflies are veracious, they can defoliate or even kill a Ficus hedge in a matter of weeks.  With their needle like mouths Whiteflies suck the juices from their host plants causing them to wilt, yellow, shed their leaves and eventually die. Ficus trees shedding their leaves and yellowing is a common sign of an infestation. There are serveal systemic insecticides that can be used to control the infestation.  Some of the treatment can last up to a year.
